What is the File Searcher?

The File Searcher is a Python-based GUI application that helps users scan a selected directory (including subfolders) for specific file types and generate an Excel report containing detailed file information. It provides an easy way to catalog, sort, and analyze files within a chosen folder.

This tool is particularly useful for organizing large directories, auditing file storage, or tracking file modifications across different locations.

How It Works

Back to Tools and Software |

Select a Folder

Click the "Browse" button to choose a directory on your system. The tool will recursively scan all subfolders within the selected location.

Choose File Types to Scan

A table of checkboxes allows you to select the file types you want to include in the scan. Supported file types: XLSX, XLS, CSV, TXT, PNG, PSD, JPG, ZIP, PDF.

Select Output Format

One Tab: All files are recorded in a single sheet.
One Tab per File Type: A separate sheet is created for each file type.

Generate Report

Click the "Submit" button to start scanning. A progress bar displays scanning progress to indicate the tool is actively working.

Save or Open the Report

Once scanning is complete, you will be prompted:
- "Would you like to Save this file before opening it?"
- Selecting "Yes" allows you to choose a save location.
- Selecting "No" opens the report immediately without saving.
- If the tool generates a temporary report, it will automatically create a new version if an existing one is already open.

Report Details

The generated Excel file contains the following details for each file:
